Ethical body – BACP
In the UK, ‘therapist’, ‘psychotherapist’ or ‘counsellor’ are not protected titles, which means that there is currently no government regulation and anyone can call themselves a therapist. Given the nature of this work, such as engaging with vulnerability, distress, risk of harm and safeguarding for example, ethical standards to guide good practice are essential.
There are several ethical bodies and I am registered with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). To be registered with the BACP requires me to be appropriately trained with an accredited qualification. For my training and qualifications, click here.
My work is regulated by the BACP Ethical Framework and in following this Framework I am committed to ensuring client safety, confidentiality, informed consent and the accountability of my practice, such as through a transparent complaint’s procedure. As well as undergoing continuing professional development (CPD), I am also required to have regular supervision with a practitioner who is also bound by the ethical standards of their own ethical body.
